Whose Goal are you working on?
Many people have Goals, and they have a definite plan to work toward achieving their goal. That is great as far as goal setting, planning and implementation is concerned. However, many of these people when they achieved their goals they were not happy and never have a sense of achievement, let along feeling of success. They in fact felt dejected
On my last post, “Can having Goal Bring You Success?” talked about this issue. There are many people advocate that to be Successful, one must have goal and works toward it. While no one can deny that having goal is the pre-requisite of success, the question here is “Whose Goal Are you working on?” Everyone who watches football know that you can score by bypassing the goalkeeper and striking the ball into the goal gate, but the score is awarded to your opponent team not yurs as you are hitting the ball into the wrong goal gate. You may not agreed with me and claim the football game’s goal and your personal goal for life is different ball game. It happened, and will always happen.
Have you ever watch the movie by Bruce Willis “The Kid” where Bruce play an image consultant and then he met his nemesis, a kid who happened to be him at young age. While Bruce is a very successful image consultant and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle, he was never happy and having a sense of achievement, through this kid, Bruce had found out what he really want in life, his dream is to be a pilot and of course he achieved his dream at the end.
This is movie but in life it happened Few years ago, I heard almost similar case of a young lady who gave up seven years of medical study to pursue her dream. The story was related to me by a friend who was working with the lady in the same financial institute, she was young, ambitious and energetic and in every aspect a leader. Though I have heard of her as we are both in financial industry, but we never met. When she completed her high school, her parents wanted her to become a medical doctor, as this will bring pride and fame to her family. With much pressure from her parents and relative, being a filial daughter she gave in and pursue medical study.
On her graduation day after receiving the scroll, she handed over her scroll to her parents, and to the shock of her parents, she told them that she had fulfill their wish of having a “medical doctor’ in their family by completing her study; now that their wish had been fulfilled, she had to pursue her own dream and goal. Her passion is in marketing, she love to meet and lead people and not contented in confining herself in a small room meeting sick people even though it is a noble work. The last I knew, she was assigned to lead a team to start a new branch in a foreign country and becoming the first foreign lady bank manager in that developing nation.
Many people have goal, but are the goal their own or some one else who have an authority over them and influencing their goal like the case of the bank manager earlier? How many people have the courage to defy the odd and making a U turn to pursue their goal after realizing what they have achieved are not really what they wanted in life.
A friend of mine who had a dream of written a book on self improvement, share this poet with me,
“Hold on to your dreams as the year unfold
Don’t compromise the ideas that you hold
For history’s pages are written the deeds
Of those who had the courage to live by their creeds
Who held to their dreams and at last achieved
The lofty goals in which they believed
So be true to yourself in all that you do
Reach for the stars and your dreams will come true.”
Barbara Burrow.
Yes, be true to yourself and ask, “Whose Goal am I pursuing right now?”

The problem is many who work on “their Goal” did not realize that what they working so hard on is someone else’s goal.
