“The problem with most people in Goal setting is not that they set their Goal too high and missed, but they set it too low and hit every time.” T. Harv Ekar, author of the The Millionaire Mind.
Here is the case of self fulfilling prophecy in setting the goal too low in reaching quarter final by an athlete, ” It is disappointing but I am satisfied with my outing in Beijing. My objective was to reach the quarter finals and I did it.”
While every one who participate in the Olympics either as participant or volunteer deserve a praise and a pat on their back, but there is a lot of differences between a true champion and mere participant. The true champion know what they are capable of and their mind is clear on what they wanted, while the mere participant, leave it to chance and luck. It is not surprising that the said athlete reach her goal and stop at quarter as it was her goal. Like what T. Havr Ekar put it, “The problem with most people in Goal setting is not that they set their Goal too high and missed, but they set it too low and hit every time.”
Most people do not want to set higher goal for fear of not acheiving it, and here is one athlete who shows the color of a true champion. It was told that Michael Phelps went to the Beijing Olympics to better the record of seven Gold Medals in one game set by US swimmer Mark Spitz at Munich in 1972, it look like Phelps is going to better the record basing on the motivation that he had in the pool. Setting such a high Goal to surpass the Olympics icons like Mark Spitz, Carl Lewis and Larysa Latynina who all won nine Gold medal in their career may seems impossible at time, but the true champion know that while they might be competing with world best athletes, but the real test and competitor is himself, their mindset and will power. Phelps has better all of the Olympics Icons to won eleven gold medals and become arguably the “Greatest Olympian” of all time and his quest to better Mark Spitz records of seven gold medals in one game continues as he is on course for another three with Five Gold medals and Five world records under his belt.
“Listening to the anthem, with the medal around your neck is an amazing feeling, I am almost at a loss for words. Growing up I always wanted to be an Olympian.” ” said Phelps, after his tenth record medal. see more of Michale Phelps here
So be careful of what you set your GOAL at, you might just get it.
